Greenwashing 101

What is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing is a company providing false information or a lack of information, in order to mislead the consumer about the product, ultimately leading the customer to believe the product is more environmentally sound than it is. Below are a few ways you can actively think about watching for

Don’t Be Fooled By Sustainable Words
Many brands that greenwash use words like ‘sustainable’ natural’ ‘responsible’ ‘eco’ but have no information on the number or figures to back it up.

Green Isn’t Always Good
Companies will use color to try and make you think they are a sustainable product, just because a cleaning product is green doesn’t mean it’s good for the earth.

Check for Certifications
Fair Trade, Bluesign, and GOTS are popular certifications to look for.

Transparency
If a company doesn’t talk about supply chain, materials, sustainable practices, or their level of transparency, they are probably greenwashing.

Look Them Up
Certified B Corp and Fashion Revolution are great resources for checking if you can trust what a company is telling you.
